The word titanic refers to something huge. Such was the magnitude of the ship, when it was built. Unluckily, the phrase became even more famous, with the downfall of the giant.
Titanic set sail from Southampton, England to New York on her maiden and only voyage, on April 12, 1912. The unsinkable ship had some of the richest businessmen in the world and to the contrast there were also the poor people from Europe and Middle East hoping for a good future in America. RMS titanic was the largest and the most luxurious ship of her days and all the passengers marveled at its design, comfort and the unsinkable properties of the ship.
During this voyage, titanic and its crew was warned about the ice bergs in that area by the other ships which have navigated through that region. Giving less importance to these warnings, the queen of ships sailed at the top speed of 20.5 knots. The titanic was owned by the British White Star Line and so she flew the British flag. She had been designed to carry 42 life boats. Its designer planned 50. But when the ship set sail it had only a mere 20, which was 4 more than that specified under the rules and regulations of the British government.
When all the passengers were enjoying their evening, the ship kissed an ice berg at 11.40 pm on April 14.1912. From then titanic was on the sea for just less than three hours. At 2.18, it sank completely into the icy waters of the Atlantic. The life boats began to be filled in shear panic. But many boats were not filled to the capacity. Only a mere 705 were rescued and the wholesome 1523 drowned in the cold sea.
RMS Carpathia was the first ship that came to the rescue of the Titanic. But it was late by three and a half hours. If it had come earlier the death toll would have been decreased. By 8.30, April 15,1912, all the escaped passengers were aboard the RMS Carpathia and they reached New York, but many with their kith and kin lost in the sea. Carelessness and panic had made the unsinkable ship to sink.
